The South Dakota Professional Photographers Association presented it’s 2018 Photographer of the Year award to Erica Lane Harvey of Rapid City South Dakota. The Photographer of the Year Award is given to the South Dakota photographer with the highest total case score based on the North Central District Photographic Print Competition final scores. The North Central District Print Competition, hosted by Professional Photographers of America, was held in March.

Erica Lane Harvey is one of South Dakota’s most decorated and accomplished young photographers!  She graduated with honors from the renowned Brooks Institute in 2003 with a degree in photojournalism. She then worked for Robert Sharp & Associates Advertising Agency in Rapid City, S.D.,  as a videographer and photographer and stayed working in the commercial realm until 2005 where she decided to Venture out on her own. She was unsure where her real passion was though until 2014 when her passion for nature photography and education drew her to re-brand her business into Erica Lane Photography.  Erica’s photo of a female bear and her cub, “Hey Boo Boo”,  earned her the coveted  “Highly Honored” status in the 2016 Windland Smith Rice International Awards. Her image of an Elk called “Howdy Partner” and the bison photo called “Good as Gold” were also awarded the status of “Highly Honored” in the 2016 Yellowstone Forever contest.  Erica has been awarded the “Peg Sagen People’s Choice Award” two consecutive years, as well as “Best in Show” one year, at the Rapid City Dahl Fine Arts Center’s Dahl Mountain Photography Contest.  She is a Professional Photographers of America (PPA) member, and was recently awarded Platinum Photographer of the year and her image of a fox called “Year of the Fox” was in the top ten for landscape and nature at the 2018 PPA Grand Imaging Awards. She is quickly earning merits towards higher degrees that the association bestows, most recently earning her CPP or Certified Professional Photographer certification. Erica’s eye, energy, and her passion for conservation give her images a unique and natural appearance of the best scenery that this world has to offer.  She spends many months of the year traveling and photographing breathtaking places. She and her work can also be found in galleries and art festivals throughout the Midwest.

Congratulations on your award Erica!
